Standard Wire Center Halyard has a 5/16" diameter and a wire core running through the center.  The advantage of wire core is a longer life and the higher chance that you will see it wearing prior to it breaking so that you can replace it before that happens.  Wearing can happen for many reasons, inappropriate sized rope rubbing the truck or pulley, inadequate thickness for high winds,or even picking against an object close to the flagpole.  A wire core will increase your likelihood of catching a wearing rope before it breaks.
